What to Expect at a DOT Physical
If you’re a commercial driver, getting your DOT physical is a crucial part of maintaining your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). At Mini-Cassia Chiropractic and Sports Medicine, we understand that knowing what to expect can help make the process smoother and less stressful. Let’s walk through everything you need to know about your DOT physical examination.
Department of Transportation Physicals
What is a DOT Physical?
A DOT physical is a comprehensive medical examination required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to ensure commercial drivers are physically capable of safely operating their vehicles. This exam must be performed by a certified medical examiner listed on the FMCSA National Registry.
How to Prepare for Your DOT Physical Appointment
What to Bring With You
Contact your provider to see if they have any additional items they would like you to bring to your appointment. As a general rule, you should plan on bringing the following items with you to your DOT physical:
- Valid photo ID
- Complete list of medications (including dosages)
- Medical records related to any existing conditions
- Eyeglasses or contact lenses if you wear them
- List of surgeries or medical procedures
- Any hearing aid devices if you use them
- Previous DOT medical certificate if applicable
Medical History to Report
If you have any diagnosed chronic conditions, be sure to disclose them to your examiner. They may ask you for documentation showing that your condition is being treated and your symptoms are being managed. The following conditions and medical information are also covered as part of your DOT exam:
- Any chronic conditions (diabetes, heart disease, sleep apnea, etc.)
- Past surgeries
- Current medications
- History of seizures
- Any other medical conditions that could affect driving
What are the Outcomes for a DOT Physical?
There are four potential outcomes for a Department of Transportation Physical exam. In order to “pass” and receive your full 2-year medical certificate, you must meet certain standards set by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Certain conditions may qualify you for a conditional certification, while others may disqualify you from certification. Learn about the different outcomes below.
Full Certification
- 2-year medical certification
- Granted if you meet all FMCSA requirements
Conditional Certification
- 1-year or less medical certification
- You may be required to have your conditions monitored
- Follow-up evaluations may need to be scheduled to keep your conditional certificate
Temporary Disqualification
- No medical certification granted, may re-test in the future
- Your medical condition requires treatment
- You may be re-evaluated after you have received treatment, and specialist documentation may be required to show your condition has improved
Permanent Disqualification
- No medical certification granted, may appeal through FMCSA
- Certain medical conditions may permanently disqualify you from receiving your DOT medical certification
